Skin Care Tips - Want fewer zits and outbreaks?

Good skin is part genetics, part lifestyle, and part skin care rituals.  Unfortunately there is nothing we can do about our genetics, but there is a lot we can do about living a healthy skin lifestyle and performing good skin care habits.

Below is a list of easy things you can do to improve your skin.

Good Skin Care Habits

Stop Popping your Pimples.
Sometimes this is necessary to do but a lot of the time it increased the risk of further inflammation, irritation, and possible infection. If you are to pop a zit, make sure to clean your face and hands thoroughly first.
Remove Make-Up Daily
Leaving make up on over night clogs pores trapping dirt and oil.  Wash your face before going to bed.
Use Mild Soaps  or Face Washes designed for Sensitive Skins.
Choose your soap wisely.  Avoid harsh antibacterial soaps.  Some of the best face washes contain the active ingredient benzoyl peroxide. 5-10% strength is good for mild to moderate acne while 10% is often recommended for more severe acne.

Exfoliate
Exfoliation is the task of gently removing dead skin cells. Gently scrub your face with a defoliant product.  You can choose either a natural product or an over the counter (chemical) one.   Performing this regularly is the key.  Most experts recommend exfoliating once to twice a week.  Exfoliating more than this can actually increase the chances of acne due to skin irritation. Pat dry your face when finished, as rubbing can cause irritation to the new fresh layer of skin.

Good Toner
Toner helps to tighten your pores and cleansing.  Apply the toner to your face and wipe with a cotton ball.  Use another clean cotton ball to dry your face.  Toners containing anti-bacterial agents like alcohol, peroxide and benzalkonium chloride can be helpful in preventing acne.

Establish and Maintain a Routine.
Most acne treatments take time to work. It usually takes between two and eight weeks before you can see any significant improvement.

It is not uncommon for acne medications to initially cause you to break out worse than before you get better.  This is because the medications bring the existing underlying pimples to the surface.  Give the medications about one to two weeks to work..

Natural Supplements for Good Skin
Apple Cider Vinegar - Drink daily four tablespoons diluted with water.
Aloe Vera Gel - fresh from the plant, taken orally.
Zinc Tablet – once daily

Consult your Doctor
If all else fails, consult your family doctor or dermatologist.  Ask your doctor if supplements are right for you.

Healthy Skin Lifestyle

Eat a healthy diet, including fruits and vegetables.  Avoid excessive oily and rich foods e.g. fries, chocolate, etc..  The occasional splurge is OK but for great skin these foods must be avoided.

Drink plenty of water. Staying well hydrated helps your skin by allowing the body to remove waste products efficiently.

Don't stress out! Stress often causes a break out. Find ways to relax such as exercise, yoga or meditation.

Keep hair off of your face. If you want bangs make sure to cleanse your skin regularly to avoid oil and dirt build ups.

Sunlight is good for healthy skin.  But be careful not to get too much sunlight as this increases the chance of sun burn and skin cancer.

Get plenty of good sleep, 7-8 hours a night.

Change your pillow case weekly. Your face is on your pillow case on average 6-8 hours a day.  Change it frequently to avoid dirt, oil and bacteria build ups.

Develop and Maintain a Good Skin Care Rituals.  You’ve been doing everything right, your skin is looking much better.  Don’t stop!  If you go back to your old ways chances are your acne may return.
